The Story

Stage House Tavern has been a Mountainside fixture since 2007, but calling it a "fixture" doesn't do it justice. This is the kind of place that evolves without losing its identity — the menu gets refreshed seasonally, the beer list rotates constantly, but the stone fireplace, the worn wooden bar, and the general vibe of "neighborhood spot where everybody actually knows each other" hasn't changed in nearly 20 years.

Owner Mike Carlin opened the original Stage House in Scotch Plains in 2003, then expanded to Mountainside four years later. The Mountainside location quickly became the flagship — bigger space, full kitchen, and a location right on South Ave that catches both local traffic and people driving through from Summit to Westfield.

According to their website and local coverage, the goal was simple: create a place where you could bring your kids on Sunday and your date on Friday. Same menu, same room, totally different energy depending on when you show up. Based on the crowds I've seen — both times I visited and whenever I drive by during peak hours — they nailed it.

What to Order

The Stage House Burger

• 8oz Angus patty, aged cheddar, bacon-onion jam, brioche bun

• $17

• This is the burger that built the place. The bacon-onion jam is the difference-maker — sweet, savory, and just messy enough that you'll need extra napkins. Comes with hand-cut fries that are actually crispy (a rarity in tavern burger land).

Fish Tacos

• Blackened cod, avocado crema, pickled slaw, flour tortillas

• $16

• Added to the menu in 2023 and immediately became a top seller. The slaw cuts the richness of the blackened fish perfectly. Order two if you're hungry — the portion is generous but not huge.

Brunch: Breakfast Burrito

• Scrambled eggs, chorizo, peppers, onions, cheddar, salsa verde

• $15

• Weekend brunch only (Sat-Sun 10 AM – 3 PM). This is the sleeper hit — not as photogenic as the pancakes or the eggs Benedict, but it's the thing regulars order after they've been through the menu once.

Beer: Rotating Taps

• 16 craft beers on tap, rotating weekly

• $7-9 per pint

• The beer program is serious. Stage House was doing craft beer before most of Union County knew what an IPA was. Current standouts: Kane Head High (local NJ), Bolero Snort Bull Pop (also NJ — they lean local), and whatever saison they have on tap (usually excellent).

The Vibe

Weeknight dinner: Families, couples, the after-work crowd. The dining room fills up around 6:30. Bar seats are easier to grab if you're solo or a pair.

Friday/Saturday night: Louder, busier, more energy. The bar area gets standing-room-only by 8 PM. If you want a table, reservation is smart. If you want the bar experience, show up by 7.

Sunday brunch: The most underrated time to go. The breakfast burger and bloodies are the draw, but the real win is the pace — it's relaxed, the staff isn't rushing, and you can actually have a conversation without yelling.

Outdoor seating: Patio opens weather-permitting (usually mid-May). 8 tables, first-come-first-served. Gets full fast on nice weekends.

Insider Tips

• Happy hour: Mon-Fri 3-6 PM. $5 drafts, $7 wines, discounted apps. The wings and pretzel bites are the move.

• No reservations for bar seating — but if you show up at 5:30 on a Friday, you can usually grab two seats and order off the full menu.

• Parking: Lot in back fills up fast. Street parking on South Ave is usually available within a block.

• The fireplace: Request a table near it in winter. It's the best seat in the house.

The Verdict

Stage House Tavern isn't trying to be the best restaurant in New Jersey. It's trying to be the best restaurant in Mountainside — and for a lot of people, it is. The food is consistently good (not always great, but never bad), the beer program is legitimately excellent, and the atmosphere is exactly what a neighborhood tavern should be.

Rating: 4.2/5 — The kind of place you bring out-of-town guests to show them what Mountainside is about.
